Fantastic Summer Auction At Plymouth Auction Rooms

The summer months are often quiet periods in salerooms, however the team at Plymouth Auction Rooms have been kept busy cataloguing and appraising a host of interesting collections. They say good things come in threes, but rarely do they come in fives. Within just over one week, we have received preliminary instructions to sell five private collections of Swarovski from as far as West London.

Some 400 lots are being prepared for the Summer Auction on the 17^th August, and of interest is the residual antique contents of a large Plymouth property. Over a generation ago the owners were keen collectors of all manner of antiques and assembled a fascinating array of Asian bronzes, including interesting Hindu deity figures alongside oriental buddhas. Also discovered in the property is a beautiful range of Victorian oil lamps, featuring various opaline coloured shades and reservoirs and smart brass Corinthian columns. There is keen interest in these lamps today, so expect serious competition when they come up for sale.

This auction will also include consignments resulting from home visits and saleroom appraisals. Including a fine marine painting by Henry Redmore, titled ‘HMS Victory off Dover Castle’. This 19^th century work of art is expected to sell for £500.

Cataloguing has also been underway for one gentleman’s childhood collection of Dinky and Corgi models, featuring several TV related vehicles and even an original 1960’s Beatles toy guitar.

Also coming up is a lifetimes collection of 19^th century blue and white transfer porcelain including quality pieces by Masons Ironstone are to be sold in group lots, with estimates from £50 to £200.

From the same mid-Cornwall property is an established collection of 18^th and 19^th century engraved prints featuring many classical works. These have also been arranged into suitable and affordable lots.

For the clock enthusiasts, there are two Louis the fourteenth style French bracket clocks, but of particular interest is the ornate and fine clock by Charles Frodsham and Company. Decorated with cherubs and pierced metal work, this is expected to sell for £300 to £500. Standing in a property for many years is a typical grandfather clock, but the maker Benjamin Reed of Plymouth will add a further premium to its saleability, with a brass arched dial, 8 day striking movement and a mahogany case, this clock is a real affordable antique at just £200 to £300.

The Saleroom has been busy with other collections arriving daily, such as a good collection of 18^th and 19^th century silverware. Within which is Lot 2, a rare silver and gilt flagon by John King of London dating from 1769-70. As well as a Victorian mahogany wellington chest, Chinese porcelain, and an unusual 1960’s globe table light. In the glass section there are three nice cabinet pieces of Lalique, featuring a poisson plate alongside a hiboux vase.
