Beryl Cook, oil, 'Bride to Be', framed and glazed, 17cm x 11.5cm, overall size 27cm x 22cm. Provenance; gifted by Beryl Cook to Sarah Donaldson in 1995. Sarah was Beryl's hairdresser in Plymouth and met Beryl on her Hen Night in the Dolphin Hotel pub on Plymouth Barbican. A week later the artist presented the painting to Sarah and it has been with her since. The painting is very similar to the works Hen Night and Hen Night II (held at the Glasgow Museum Resource Centre), it is quite likely that Sarah's Hen Party was the inspiration for these works. Words of Beryl Cook describing Hen Night. "This is something we saw quite often a bride-to-be being escorted from pub to pub by her friends, pausing for a drink in each. The friends make the bride a hat (in this case a large cardboard box covered in silver paper and saucy decorations), and there is much singing and hooting as they go through the streets. I am interested in these customs and learned that a bride getting married for the second time will also have a hat, but a much smaller one and more subdued".
