Elmer Comes To Town
An amusing and heartwarming presence has lumbered its way into Plymouth Auction Rooms. Elmer, ‘Compass Rosie’ is a delightful sculpture of an elephant painted by Anne-Marie Byrne and inspired by the children’s book illustrated by the late artist David McKean. Painted with iconic imagery evoking the spirit of Plymouth, Elmer has the capacity to illuminate the room with technicolour Devonian pride and stimulate child-like wonder. Anne-Marie Byrne is an artist based in Suffolk who used to work as an archaeologist and civil servant. She reconnected with her artistic passion when the Pigs Gone Wild trail arrived in Ipswich in 2016. Since then, she has participated in various art trails across the UK, where she painted different animals such as lions, sun bears, hares, giraffes, bees, ducks, and otters. In addition, she created a car inspired by Van Gogh's art, which was featured in a charity rally all the way to Monte Carlo. When she is not painting, Anne-Marie also engages in creating digital works of art and creative writing.
