Three works that caught my eye in our forthcoming Selected Regional & Contemporary Art Sale
With more than 250 lots in this month's Selected Regional & Contemporary Art Sale, there is something for every taste and budget. From well-known Plymouth artists to contemporary sculpture and sporting art, the sale reflects the wide variety of works now finding favour with today's collectors. Here are three pieces that particularly caught my eye.
A Plymouth Icon – Robert Lenkiewicz
One of the stand-out works is Robert Lenkiewicz's powerful portrait 'Frank the Spoons', from his celebrated Vagrancy Relationship Series. Frank was a familiar figure on Plymouth's streets during the 1970s and 1980s, and Lenkiewicz immortalised him as part of his exploration of those living on the margins of society.
The painting has an impressive provenance, having previously been sold through Bonhams in London before entering a private collection. Estimated at £2,000–£3,000, it is more than simply a portrait; it is a fascinating piece of Plymouth's social history and one that demonstrates why Lenkiewicz remains one of the city's most collected artists.
Contemporary Collecting – Tim Cotterill 'Frogman'
Art collecting continues to evolve and modern sculpture has become increasingly popular. Among this month's highlights is 'Cliff Hanger' by internationally renowned British sculptor Tim Cotterill, better known as 'Frogman'.
His colourful enamelled bronze frogs have attracted collectors around the world, combining craftsmanship with humour and playful design. This limited edition example, complete with its certificate and accompanying book, carries an estimate of £500–£600 and perfectly illustrates how today's buyers are often just as interested in contemporary sculpture as traditional paintings.
The Spirit of Speed – Phillip Dutton-White
Completing my selection is a dramatic watercolour by the late Phillip Dutton-White depicting Indianapolis legend Wilbur Shaw in his famous Maserati 8CTF 'Boyle Special'. A Master of the Royal Society of Artists & Designers, Dutton-White became renowned for capturing the speed, movement and excitement of motorsport.
Previously exhibited during the Century of Speed exhibition celebrating 100 years of the Indianapolis 500, the painting beautifully combines fine art with racing history. Estimated at £1,000–£2,000, it is likely to appeal to both art collectors and classic motoring enthusiasts.
