Giant Hockney Book makes big impression in Plymouth
This week something rather unusual arrived through our Plymouth saleroom — a giant David Hockney book so large that it takes two people to comfortably handle it.
Among the furniture, silver and paintings that pass through our doors each week, occasionally something completely unexpected appears, and this was certainly one of those moments.
Published by Taschen and simply titled Hockney A Bigger Books, the remarkable volume is far from an ordinary art book. Measuring on a scale more often associated with furniture than publishing, it was produced as a limited edition celebrating the life and work of one of Britain's most important contemporary artists.
David Hockney became one of the most influential and recognisable artists of the past century, known worldwide for his vibrant use of colour and instantly recognisable style. His recent passing has prompted tributes across the art world and renewed appreciation of his remarkable body of work and artistic legacy.
What makes this example particularly eye-catching is not simply its rarity, but its sheer presence. It feels almost like an artwork in its own right. As we unpacked it there was an immediate sense that this was something special. Even before turning a page it commands attention.
Collectors today are increasingly looking beyond traditional paintings and sculptures, with important books, limited editions and design pieces becoming highly desirable in their own right.
Sometimes the most unexpected items to arrive in Plymouth turn out to be among the most memorable.
The book will be offered at our Summer Art Auction on 22nd July.
