It’s not often that you see 200-year-old pocket watches let alone those that are prettier on the reverse than they are on the front. Arriving at the Plymouth saleroom recently for a valuation was this charming pocket by William Tarleton of Liverpool. Made in solid gold and dating from the last quarter of the 18th century, it has a white enamelled dial set with roman numerals, the key wind fusee verge movement is signed and numbered but it’s the back of the watch that really catches the eye. A beautiful blue guilloche enamel back plate with attractive detail that still shines bright in natural light. Pocket watches by Tarleton can be found today in the Liverpool Museum however this model is up for auction on Tuesday at Plymouth Auction Rooms where it could make over £500.
Auctioneer Paul keen “this is a gem of pocket watch, although needing some attention to the movement, we are expecting keen interest from collectors across the country”.
