Rowing Through History: The Clare College Vintage Paddle Uncovered
At Plymouth Auction Rooms, the discovery of a vintage rowing paddle trophy from the esteemed Clare College has ignited a buzz among collectors and history enthusiasts alike. Unearthed amidst a house clearance, this paddle stands as a testament to the rich tradition of rowing, echoing the illustrious heritage of Clare College.
Clare College, situated in Cambridge, England, is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge. Its origins trace back to 1326 when it was established as University Hall, rendering it the university’s second-oldest surviving college, following Peterhouse. The renowned rowing competition between the two competing universities, commonly known as ‘The Boat Race’, commenced in 1829 and persists to the present day. The earliest documented oars, associated with the historic Oxford and Cambridge ‘Boat Races’, appear to have been relatively uncomplicated in design.
This particular oar was awarded to a family member of its current owners who participated in a race held in 1890, with the names of present players listed boldly in gold on its surface. As the anticipation builds and bids fly, don’t miss your chance to secure a piece of history with the sale of this beautifully preserved trophy, which stands as a tangible link to a storied past, evoking the spirit of competition and camaraderie that defines the imbedded tradition of rowing at Clare College. Mark your calendars for the upcoming Silver, Jewellery & Antiques auction where this lot will be featured on Tuesday 30th April at 10:30am.
