King’s Royal Irish Hussars Military Collection Sells at Auction

A visit to a non-descript house in Plympton, Plymouth, last month yielded a host of fascinating antiques and object that had been handed down through the family, with links all the way to Ireland in the 19th century.

Downstairs we discovered Chinese porcelain, Art deco collectables and Asian sculptures. But it was the tight squeeze under the eves of the roof that proved productive, as it was there we spotted an interesting collection of military effects all framed in one display.

Following a discussion with the family, closer inspection of the item, and research, we established that it was a set of officers attire from the King’s Royal Irish Hussars. These brave soldiers were involved in the Crimean War, and on 25 October 1854 part of the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade led by Lord Cardigan.

Online promotion ensured that all the ‘right’ collectors were aware of the sale. But we were not expecting just how popular this lot would be. On the day bidding opened at £2,000 and soared on up, finally selling to a phone bidder from America for £5,700 (+premium).
