Day two of the upcoming Tony Martin estate sale on 3rd September at Plymouth Auction Rooms promises to be a landmark event for collectors of Cornish art. Among the highlights are four original paintings by Harold Charles Harvey (1874–1941), the celebrated Cornish-born painter of the Newlyn School.
These significant works - Polishing Day, Planting Potatoes, The Little Mother, and Boy with Calf - are likely to attract national attention. Each painting captures Harvey’s signature style: intimate Cornish rural life rendered in oil with a vivid yet subtle palette.
Previously exhibited at Penlee House Gallery & Museum from July 2001 - January 2022, these pieces are among the “crown jewels” of the collection and could fetch in the region of £10,000 each. Harvey’s works, whether depicting family moments or agricultural tasks, offer a poignant vision of Cornwall’s early twentieth-century social landscape.
Auctioneer Paul Keen said 'Tony had an exceptional eye and was passionate about preserving Cornwall's artistic heritage. His Newlyn School paintings are museum-quality pieces".
As the collection of the late East Looe antiques dealer Tony Martin enters the auction rooms, these rare Harvey canvases stand out not just for rarity but for their emotional resonance. Prospective bidders are encouraged to preview the catalogue, which will be online shortly. For further details please call the saleroom on 01752 254740 or email info@plymouthauctions.co.uk.
