The Devon owner of a Beryl Cook painting had contacted us about the likely auction value of a painting that he had purchased at the first Beryl Cook exhibition in Plymouth in 1975. The painting titled ‘Family with the Transistor’ was instantly recognisable as the iconic work of the British artist.
We were confident that this rare painting would attract interest and placed a cautionary estimate of £6,000 to £8,000. Early March 2021 the owner decided to consign the painting to our popular Contemporary Art sale.
We were able to quickly market the painting both in local media and internationally through online and magazine promotions which led to a flurry of enquiries, as well as online and telephone bidding.
The owner was delighted when it was finally sold to a collector from Plymouth for a respectable £11,400 (+fees) on 24 Match 2021.
