Titanic history is a highly sought after category at auction. Going under the gavel at the end of next month is a floor tile from the first class smoking room!
This floor tile from the first class smoking room is one of a number that had a lucky escape from going down along with the rest of the ship.
The Harland and Wolff shipbuilding company provided and fitted the tiles, however a number were removed from the Titanic at Southhampton between April 7th and 8th by order of Thomas Andrews, considered to be imperfect. After being stored at the Harland and Wolff workshops in Southhampton they were later used in their main offices floor covering in Belfast.
The Harland and Wolff tiles came in two colour combinations, blue and red and grey and sepia. The first colour combination for the Titanic was apparently the grey and sepia tiles.
After a narrow escape from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, the tile is now here in Plymouth to be put to auction on the 29th April in our Antiques & Collectables Sale. For more information please call the saleroom on 01752 254740 or email info@plymouthauctions.co.uk
