Auctioneer Paul Keen has handpicked three standout lots for this month's art sale.
Maxwell Ashby Armfield (1881-1972), a prominent figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement, is featured with The Scarlet Squirrel (Lot 50), expected to attract strong interest. Armfield, known for his use of medieval tempera paints, inscribed the work 'for Margaret Poore 1992.' On closer inspection, the red squirrel is visible on the sitter's sleeve. Having remained in the same family for generations, it carries a guide price of £1,200 to £1,500.
A special section dedicated to Fred Yates (1922-2008) includes Lot 150, A Cornish Cottage(77cm x 98.5cm), a stunning piece that has been in the seller's possession since the 1980s, when it was acquired with their house. This work is expected to fetch around £2,000.
Several pieces by Robert Lenkiewicz (1941-2002) have passed through Paul Keen’s auctions, but Lot 5 is a notable highlight. Titled Painter with Anna in the Studio(152 x 121cm), this 1994 exhibition piece, shown at the Halcyon Gallery in Birmingham, is expected to sell for £3,000 to £5,000. Bidding could be competitive, with over 100 works up for sale.
The auction will take place on Wednesday, March 12th, at 6pm. For more details, visit plymouthauctions.co.uk.
