An antique ring discovered at a recent South Hams valuation sold for £11,000 this week.
This super rare treasure was brought along to our popular event at the Rose and Crown and identified as an important Memento Mori ring dating back to the reign of George I in the early 18th century. These rings were worn as important reminders of the transience of human life, encouraging humility and repentance, but also to seize each day as it comes.
This fine example presented a gold skeleton wrapped around the length of the black enamel band. A raised coffin-shaped stone concealed another skeleton, and ‘memento mori’ written in gold, flanks the head. The gold interior is inscribed ‘Thomas Bond ob 19 April 1723’.
The ring had been handed down through generations and was accompanied by a fascinating document tracing the Symons of Cornwall family lineage back to William the Conqueror!
Auctioneer Paul Keen conducted the Antiques, Silver & Collectables sale, taking international and UK bids both online and on the telephone. After a fierce bidding battle, the gavel came down at an impressive £11,000 plus premium!
The sellers were delighted... "What a superb result! The professionalism shown at valuation, presentation and auction is outstanding".
