Historical Portraits with a Modern Legacy: Washington Family Heirlooms
Plymouth Auction Rooms is gearing up for the extraordinary unveiling of two captivating 19th-century portraits with significant familial ties.
The highlight of the upcoming auction is a striking likeness of Thomas Washington, whose portrait bears an intriguing resemblance to the esteemed American President George Washington, though no direct connection has been established. This exciting potential link to the first president of the United States is bound to generate considerable interest among genealogy enthusiasts, historical researchers, and appreciators of fine portraiture.
Accompanying Thomas is the elegant portrait of Emily Budden, wearing an exquisitely detailed Victorian dress with every button articulated with remarkable verisimilitude. These cherished artworks have traversed four generations within the esteemed Washington family; several were draper’s in Huddersfield, UK. The present owners’ father, David Washington, was a chemist, and various antique glass jars from his business will be contributed to the collection.
Also in addition to these fine portraits are a treasured gold necklace passed down through generations, alongside small silver items and a tablecloth adorned with the US coat of arms. One can see the very same gold necklace in the portrait of Emily Budden.
