Nottingham Forest Football Club won the 1921-22 Second Division with the aid of outside right professional footballer Sid Gibson (1899-1938). For his efforts the club awarded him a fine gold pocket watch beautifully inscribed to him by the club.
This has remained in the Gibson family for three generations and along with a several gold footballs medals will now come to auction in Plymouth. Gibson played for six seasons with Notts Forest making 252 appearances. In 1928 he signed for Sheffield United for £5,000, a record fee for both clubs at the time. The collection includes photographs, a bronze footballer figures and Gibsons silver back clothes brush.
One can read an editorial note on the reverse of a Sid Gibson cigarette card that he “plays with tremendous dash and has wonderful ball control… his rise to fame has been sensational”
Auctioneer Paul Keen says, “ we are delighted to present the Sid Gibson collection and along with the family are hopeful that a keen football fan or even club will have an interest in the sale.”
