A rediscovered self portrait painting by Robert Lenkiewicz will headline the Summer Art Auction at Plymouth Auction Rooms. This detailed painting capturing an intense expression by the artist, was acquired directly from Lenkiewicz himself over 40 years ago, and has been in the same family collection since. It’s probable that the work was part of Project 5 ‘Love & Mediocrity’ and is expected to attract interest in the region of £5,000 – £8,000.
Auctioneer Paul Keen said “I am delighted to present this never before seen painting. We have handled many self-portraits over the years and this is certainly one of the finest”.
From the same collection comes a beautiful landscape work from the rare Project 19 titled ‘Landscape- Painter at St. Jerome’. This piece was painted in 1995, at a time when the artist was convalescing at the quiet Mudbank Lake Cottage on an estuary in South Devon.
There is real demand for this project, as there were fewer than 40 paintings produced and only 28 exhibited. This fine painting titled ‘Estuary, Early Evening’ was number 2 in the exhibition and is clearly titled and inscribed on the reverse. Of a good size, it comes to auction with a guide of £3,000 to £5,000.
This major sale will also feature the entire estate collection of a Cornish collector. Many of the artworks were purchased from sales at Plymouth Auction Rooms over the last 25 years, and keen Lenkiewicz collectors now have the opportunity to not only view these wonderful paintings, but have a real chance at acquiring them for their own growing collection.
From prints to drawings and paintings with estimates starting from just £200, there really is something for everyone at this specialist sale.
The Summer Art Auction will be taking place on Wednesday 26th July at 6pm. The catalogue can now be previewed online. To consign, please get in touch with the team by filling out our valuation form, sending images of your piece via WhatsApp on 07432 056261 or calling the saleroom on 01752 254740.
